Mr Egg
About This Spot
Step into Mr Egg on Hurst Street, and you’re greeted by a lively, vibrant energy wrapped in a cozy nook of Birmingham’s Chinatown. It’s a spot where the hum of casual chatter blends with the warm hiss of freshly brewed tea and the crisp sizzle of signature fried chicken, creating a welcoming buzz that invites you to linger. The space is modest but bright and thoughtfully arranged, making every visit feel like a little escape from the city’s pace—a brief moment to savor both the flavors and the atmosphere.
Here, the experience unfolds gently, marked by comforting textures and playful blends of taste. Imagine sinking into the juicy embrace of perfectly spiced chicken, its crispy coating a satisfying counterpoint to tender, flavorful interiors. Alongside, the array of bubble teas offers a fresh, creative touch to this casual eatery’s mood—drinks like matcha latte or brown sugar milk tea appear lovingly crafted, cool and soothing with just the right hint of indulgence. The atmosphere carries an undercurrent of discovery, inviting you to try something new each time, whether it’s a tangy pomelo tapioca shake or a delicately layered matcha crepe cake.
The rhythm here is unhurried but vibrant. Patrons often find themselves drawn not only to the generous portions but also to those subtle, delightfully textured surprises—like soft meat floss cakes or wraps kissed with a gentle mustard tang—that make each visit quietly memorable. Seating may be limited, but it encourages a kind of communal warmth, where sharing a bite or swapping recommendations feels natural and unforced.
Mr Egg reveals itself as an intimate corner of the city where food and drink become a gentle conversation between tradition and playful innovation. It’s a place that quietly earns its fans, not through flashiness but by nurturing those small, joyful moments—whether it’s the pop of chewy boba pearls in a crème brûlée milk tea or the satisfying crunch of sweet potato chips alongside perfectly spiced fried chicken. Visiting here feels less like ticking a box and more like rediscovering a favorite hidden spot, new enough to surprise but familiar enough to keep you coming back.

The Taiwanese fried chicken and Chinese pancake were delicious. And the portion was huge!

Fav fav place to get Taiwanese fried chicken popcorn and the best matcha boba tea you can get! My go to place if you are in Brum Chinatown. The space has limited seating, but food out of the world!

I love the chicken and sweet potato chips here. The chicken has the right amount of spice, juicy in the inside and crispy on the outside. The sweet potato chips is also a bit crispy and one of the yummiest I tasted. The newly made up store was nice and bright. I will definitely be back soon! Prices are quite reasonable.

It’s always a treat to visit here when I am in Birmingham. I can’t get past crème brûlée drink and black rice wrap, which has wonderful textures and flavours. I need to explore other options, like the fried chicken sometime. I’m sure all the options are good, as it’s a popular place and everything looks delicious.

i popped round for a quick “ lunch “ at mr egg and ordered a matcha brown sugar boba & fried chicken. for starters, the boba drink was spot on and could taste a nice matcha and brown sugar, however the boba itself, it was the small kind, i’ve not got anything wrong with it but it would be nice if there would be a lil headsup however that’s just me:) the fried chicken was very crispy and delicious though and no complaints on that:3 overall lovely place and rlly nothing else to say !! great little shop in china town :>

Great value for money and simple. Chinese pancake and mango bubble tea. Try also cake from Uncle cake from the opposite side of road. Much more satisfying than going for a formal dinner.

Innovative and fun range of bubble tea! We had their Mudflip Mango which taste like mango sago and their Fresh Avocado Milk with Brown Sugar Tapioca Bubbles. They also serve food - their Japanese cheesecake and matcha crepe cakes are really good. But nothing beats their street food! The black rice pancake wrap is incredible! I could eat there everyday.
